It’s About What You Like

Fuels Management Challenge CoinSome people come into the hobby and just start getting anything and everything they can get hands on. Rule of thumb is…DON’T. You will get no enjoyment of having a ton of coins around that you only have an interest in about 10% of them. Why waste the time and effort in shotgunning in all areas?

Sure you can get anything from White House coins, Army coins, Air Force Coins, DEA coins, and more but shouldn’t they mean something to you? Yes, they should.

The most important thing is find what you like. I will give you an example. I am an Air Force guy. I served in POL (Fuels Management), and SATCOM for my career. So my interest might be awesome comm coins (which it is). I don’t need to bother with any other coins because they don’t interest me. Well OK sometimes a coin will pop up that really does interest me so I will pick it up.

The point is I am going to get more out of my collecting because I am a man that knows what he wants. It’s not a terribly hard thing to accomplish. Just think to what your interests are and go for it. If you were a Marine that served in the 1st Division you might be looking at ay coins that have anything to do with that Division.

When you have an emotional attachment to your coins you are going to get into the hobby a hell of a lot more than someone in it purely for the money (which I hate more than anything else, but that’s another article). Write down on paper what you are into and start taking a look at what you can find on the internet in trade, or for purchase.
